Art Therapist
What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy uses the creative elements of visual arts, such as painting, drawing, clay and textiles as well as other creative processes such as writing, story-telling, movement and play, to facilitate self-expression, communication and self-awareness. It promotes physical, mental, social and emotional well-being by combining traditional counselling with an understanding of the therapeutic aspects of the creative process.
What is an Art Therapist?
Professionally registered Art Therapists are Master-level trained clinicians who are guided by the ethical standards and practice of ANZACATA (Australia, New Zealand and Asia Creative Arts Therapy Association). The essence of Art Therapy is that it contains both parts of its name – art and therapy. Therefore, art therapists must know both of these. They must know the art materials and processes, their nature and potential. Therapeutically, they need a thorough understanding of self and others in terms of development, psychodynamics, emotions and interpersonal relationships.
